GoPro: Just add water

Ed Becker

I can tell you precisely what I was thinking when I shot this underwater selfie with my new, $145. 85 waterproof camera.

"This was a bad idea."

It was waterproof -- on land. When submerged, the camera lasted about five minutes in five feet of water. I was lucky to get this bad picture salvaged before the camera died on the beach that day. My second thought was that I needed to get a decent camera that I could get wet. Something small, well protected by a waterproof housing, and shot high resolution.

For me, that camera has turned out to be a GoPro. I've taken my GoPro Hero 4 in a geothermal spa, under a waterfall in Iceland, snorkeling in the ocean, and frequently on my kayak. I've worn it on my head, on my wrist, and strapped on my chest in an Outer Banks surf.

As a bonus, you not only get beautiful 4k video, but you can often extract photos from the high-resolution video to frame on your wall.

Here is a quick highlight reel showing the GoPro in action.
