Surviving in swiss style

Ed Becker

Imagine that you're this person receiving a weather alert that a dangerous storm front is bearing down within hours. Or, less dramatically, your morning campfire coffee is kicking in at the worst possible time. Where would you find a port, or pot, in this rugged environment?

Amazingly and thankfully the Swiss have you covered in case of such emergencies along Bachalpsee Lake Hike Trail in Grindelwald.

Grindelwald-First, Gummi-Hütte

These small, but sturdy shelters are literally rock solid to withstand high winds, and each one has basic provisions to spend hopefully no more than one or two nights in a blizzard.

Rural Restroom

Aside from the mountains, one of the most impressive discoveries on our hike was coming across this impossibly clean restroom.

If international awards were given to the cleanest, and most well-maintained restrooms in the middle of nowhere -- it's not a contest. Finding a restroom like this one is unimaginable.

How the restroom is maintained in such a desolate setting is a backstory waiting to be researched.
